PMOS Explained — Episode 1
What is PMOS?
PMOS stands for Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
It is the new name for the condition previously known as PCOS.
So why was the name changed?
Because PCOS was always much more than “cysts” on the ovaries.
The old name could be misleading because:
• Not every woman with PMOS has polycystic ovarian morphology.
• The condition involves hormonal dysfunction.
• Metabolic features may also play an important role.
• The ovaries are only one part of the picture.
PMOS can affect menstrual cycles, ovulation, fertility, skin, hair, weight regulation, insulin sensitivity, and long-term metabolic health.
And this is why the new name better reflects the condition:
Polyendocrine = involvement of multiple hormonal systems
Metabolic = metabolic health, including insulin resistance in many women
Ovarian = ovarian function and ovulation
Syndrome = a group of features that can vary from one woman to another
The important message:
PMOS is not simply an ultrasound diagnosis, and it is not just about ovarian “cysts.”
In the next episode:
How is PMOS actually diagnosed?
