HSG is a special X-ray test using contrast dye to evaluate:

✅ The shape of the uterine cavity

✅ The patency of the fallopian tubes

✅ Possible tubal blockage

✅ Some uterine abnormalities or adhesions

It is one of the most important investigations in infertility work-up.

๐Ÿ•’ When is HSG done?

After menstruation and before ovulation

Usually between day 7–10 of the menstrual cycle

๐Ÿงช How is the procedure done?

A contrast dye is injected through the cervix

X-ray images are taken while the dye fills the uterus and tubes

The whole procedure takes only a few minutes

Mild cramping similar to menstrual pain is common and temporary.

✅ What can HSG diagnose?

  • Tubal blockage
  • Intrauterine adhesions
  • Congenital uterine anomalies
  • Sometimes it has a therapeutic effect by flushing mild tubal blockages

⚠️ Important notes:

  • Should not be done during pregnancy
  • A painkiller is recommended 30 minutes before the test
  • Occasionally, antibiotics are prescribed after the procedure
